A judge sentenced Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith to 90 days in jail Tuesday night for causing an auto accident that killed his friend, though Smith will likely end up serving only 30. Municipal Judge Debra J. Gelson suspended 60 days of the sentence providing Smith performs 500 hours of community service consisting of visiting sick children at hospitals.

B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford and Willy Aybar hit solo homers and the Tampa Bay Rays won their seventh straight game, 4-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Tuesday night. Matt Garza (6-5) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings to win consecutive starts for the first time since April 30 and May 5.

Jake Peavy's injured right ankle was re-examined Tuesday, and the San Diego Padres ace could get his protective boot off in about two weeks. Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner, has been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon. He was injured running the bases against the Chicago Cubs in late May.

The Calgary Flames have signed star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a multiyear agreement. The Flames acquired the rights to Bouwmeester on June 27 from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jordan Leopold and the 67th pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft. Bouwmeester, a native of Edmonton, completed his sixth season with the Panthers in 2008-09, recording 42 points with 15 goals and 27 assists.

Mark Sheftic shot a 70 on Tuesday to keep the lead after the three rounds of the PGA Professional National Championship. Sheftic, 34, of Ambler, Pa., was 8-under 205 heading into Thursday's final round. He leads Stephen Schneiter of Sandy, Utah; Keith Dicciani of White Plains, N.Y.; and Todd Lancaster of Aurora, Ohio, by two strokes.
