Hank Blalock's second homer of the game, a two-run shot with two outs in the ninth inning, gave Texas a 9-7 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday night and moved the Rangers within one-half game of the Angels in the AL West. Juan Rivera's three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth off Frank Francisco (2-1) tied the game at 7-all as the Angels erased a six-run deficit.

Rangers ink Gaborik for 5 years, $37.5M (AP)

Once the New York Rangers got out from under Scott Gomez's expensive contract, they turned to Marian Gaborik and gave him the money they suddenly saved. One day after trading Gomez and the five years and $33.5 million left on his contract to the Montreal Canadiens, the Rangers signed the 27-year-old Gaborik away from the Minnesota Wild with a five-year, $37.5 million deal.

Rangers lure Gaborik away from Wild (AP)

The New York Rangers are already spending the money saved when Scott Gomez was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, handing it over to flashy forward Marian Gaborik. New York made its usual splash in the free-agent market Wednesday night by signing Gaborik, who scored a career-high 42 goals in the 2007-08 season with the Minnesota Wild.

Small wins PGA Professional National Championship (AP)

Mike Small won the PGA Professional National Championship for the second time in five years, closing with a 3-under 68 on Wednesday for a one-stroke victory over Mark Sheftic and Steve Schneiter. Small, the golf coach at the University of Illinois, had a 7-under 277 total to top the 20 qualifiers for the PGA Championship at Hazeltine.

Ex-boxing champ, mayor Arguello dies (AP)

Alexis Arguello, who fought in one of boxing's most classic brawls and reigned supreme at 130 pounds, was found dead at his home early Wednesday. Coroners were conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Sandanista Party's Radio Ya and other local media were reporting it appeared to be a suicide.

A person with the knowledge of the negotiations says the Detroit Pistons have agreed in principle to contracts with free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night on the condition of anonymity because NBA rules prohibit teams from announcing free agent signings until next week.

Manny Ramirez's suspension didn't slow down the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers played their 50th and final game without Ramirez, beating the Colorado Rockies 1-0 Wednesday on pinch-hitter Rafael Furcal's RBI single in the eighth inning. During Ramirez's absence, the Dodgers went 29-21.

The Chicago Blackhawks dipped deep into the NHL free-agent market by signing star forward Marian Hossa away from the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday with a 12-year, $62.8 million contract. Hossa, who surprisingly took a one-year deal with the defending champion Red Wings last summer, cashed in this time.
